The 7 months before I joined CrossFit Central I spent losing 100 pounds, well, almost 100. I was morbidly obese and on a mission to live a fit and healthy lifestyle. I hired a trainer, taught myself how to run half marathons, attended yoga multiple times a week and changed my eating habits.
As I was nearing the end of my program with my personal trainer I had lost 90 pounds, my body fat was down to 15% and we had to make a plan for how I was going to maintain my new lifestyle. He told me that going to a local big gym wasn’t going to cut it. I needed to be around people with the same mindset as me, that were as dedicated to health as I was and who lived up to their highest ability. He told me that I had to go to Crossfit Central.
Almost immediately after starting at CrossFit CentraI I hit my 100 pound mark for weight loss, dropped to 13 % body fat, wore a size 4 (as opposed to the size 22 just 10 months before), as well as achieved a PR on my half marathon time.
When I found CrossFit, I was actually 12.5% body fat, 150 pounds, 33 years old and in the best shape of my life. I’m now averaging 17% body fat and 160-165 pounds; however, I’ve had 3 surgeries since I started, all due to incidents outside of CrossFit, and was bed-ridden for over 6 months. I had made a commitment to myself that I would not lose my fitness, health or my focus while recovering, and CrossFit Central is what held me in there. Coach Michael Gregory checking on me even when I couldn’t walk and letting me know he was ready when I would be ready really helped. If I had to do it all on my own, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today!
CrossFit Central has also given me the knowledge and ability to keep fit while traveling. Traveling is a huge part of my life and I never knew how to exercise on the road aside from running. I have a list of ‘runs around the world’, which was great, but, I don’t love to run and wanted other options. The CrossFit method of working out has given me the tools to have a great workout anywhere in the world, in any conditions. This is vital to my future health, flexibility and ability to stay in shape.
My success has everything to do with breaking through barriers and not so much about body comps. Since joining CrossFit Central in the summer of 2009 life has hit me with multiple physical barriers that could have caused huge mental barriers, leading to my return to morbid obesity.
In November of 2009 I went in for cosmetic surgery due to having lost 100 lbs. A complication happened during surgery, which almost caused me to die! After multiple blood transfusions and three months of bed rest I was up and moving again. I waited until I felt strong, contacted Coach Big Mike and said, “I’m coming back!” It was painfully slow building back up, but Mike started working with me privately and a few months later I was strong, fast and loving it again.
Unfortunately within 3 months of being back in full swing at CrossFit Central, I had another setback. I was so confident in my physical abilities I jumped on the trampoline at my parents’ house and started doing back flips. I had wanted to jump on that thing for so many years, but I never did because I was so overweight, I was afraid it wouldn’t hold me and I’d rip right through the center of it. I was so happy to be physically free, unencumbered and strong while doing back flips I really built up a lot of height and power! Then I fell right through the center of the trampoline, as it ripped open. The irony was a little too much for me to handle.
Hours later at the ER, I learned I ripped almost all of my ligaments around my ankle and broke multiple bones in my foot. There would be surgery again, titanium bolts, an ankle brace that was indefinite and the great unknown of what I would physically be able to do again. I knew I would walk normally again, but I didn’t know if I could ever do anything dynamic. Because of my history with weight I knew I had to workout in a dynamic fashion or I would gain weight again. I was in trouble!
Six weeks later, I started doing Personal Training with Big Mike just to get moving again. I couldn’t believe for the second time in one year Mike had to bring me back to “normal” due to surgery. He never blinked and kept pushing me forward. Before I knew it, I was back in class. To my amazement and Coach Big Mike’s, I am now jumping on boxes, sprinting, doing double-unders, and running. I am doing every single thing I was afraid I couldn’t do!
The energy, the fun and the dedication of this gym, my coach and classmates is unmatched and has helped solidify a lifestyle for me regardless of what comes my way. I can’t wait for 2012 to see what I can do with no setbacks!
