We’re going to the ‘ship!
In case you’ve been hiding out under a rock, CrossFit Central’s Team is going to Carson, California in T-minus 2-weeks to compete at the 2014 CrossFit Games, representing the Double-C’s.
If you are planning on making the trek out to California with us, we are guessing you know what’s up. However, you may have never been out to the Games before…or it may have been a little while since you were last there.
Regardless of whether this is your first trip to the CrossFit Games, or your 8th trip (Fun fact history: the Games started eight years ago, back in 2007 at ‘the Ranch’ in Aromas, California where Jeremy Thiel competed as an individual and placed 7th overall), there is LOTS of fun to be had.
Here are some tips and tracks for surviving the three long days out watching some of the fittest of the fit do their thing, and cheering your CrossFit Central team on to a VICTORY…
California here we come.
-A fanny pack or small backpack is a must for keeping up with all your ‘necessities’ (I will be sporting this new Festival Bag from Lululemon- [HERE]
-Sunscreen. 100% of the events are outdoors. Plenty of Vitamin D to be had.
-A hat and sunglasses. See above.
-A water bottle you can refill. You will get thirsty, and it’s better than paying $3+ for water at the stadium.
-Spritzer/fan-A personal mini fan or spritzer bottle is not necessarily a ‘necessity’, but it does get put to some good use.
-Small snacks. The stadium won’t allow ‘outside food’, but if you tuck it underneath some other stuff in your bag, they will more likely than not let it slide. Think Lara Bars, Perfect Food Bars, jerky, tuna packets, nuts/trail mix, an almond butter packet and an apple, whatever you like. Food truck lines get longgggg for food, so it’s good to have some energy on hand.
-A shaker bottle. There is protein powder galore in the Vendor Village area for you if you need another snack or protein. Tote your shaker, and your golden.
-CrossFit clothes. You are going to a CrossFit event. It’s fun, casual, a little bit sweaty. There are even spectator opportunities to workout. Dress comfortably. Tennis shoes, tank tops and shorts are perfect. And there’s plenty of shopping items in the Vendor Village for these items as well.
-A light jacket and sweat pants. Southern California is CHILLY in the mornings and evenings. Not quite like our hot Austin summers.
-A lacrosse ball and jump rope. Stash ‘em in your travel bag. You will get stiff from lots of standing around, walking and watching the Games, so rolling out will keep you loose! Having your jump rope in your carry on bag will also allow you to get a little cardio in back at your hotel if you feel an itch to move and didn’t have time to get in your workout earlier that day. Annie anyone?
And now that you are packed…how about some things to do when your not at the stadium?California has so much to do! Here are a few hot spots…(with a few CrossFit gyms in there to get your WOD on!)
-Manhattan Beach Pier [HERE] Beautiful beach. Try your hand at surfing!
-Venice Beach Boardwalk [HERE] Definitely some interesting people watching! Mimes to musicians, skateboards to body builders,medical marijuana practitioners to jugglers to jesters and everything in between make up the human landscape. You also can check out the famous Muscle Beach Gym—an outdoor gym that was once the home gym of bodybuilders Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno..
-Hollywood. If you’ve never done the ‘Hollywood thing’, you’ve got to do it at least once. It’s about a 30-45 minute drive from Carson, but part of the L.A. experience. Take a picture outside the Kodak theater with your footprints inside Will Smith’s. Break out your iPhone to be the Paparrazi
-Be an audience member at a live talk show, reality show, game show or sitcom. With a little bit of planning, you can be part of a studio audience while they are filming. Google search your fav. and see how it works.
-Ride the iconic Santa Monica Pier roller coaster – [HERE] The pier is complete with carnival games, rides, restaurants, and a small aquarium. The fun roller-coaster ride comes complete with stunning 360 degree ocean vistas. This is one of my favorite stops along The Strand bicycle path; it is a nice treat after biking 20 miles!

Food: Carson itself is not known for the best restaurants or healthiest fare (there are quite a few fast-food restaurants, but in the surrounding cities, about 10-15 minutes away, there are lots of options. Also, there are food trucks (Paleo friendly) at the Games—just be prepared to stand in some lines!
