You as Your Biggest Fan

Affirmation (noun) – 1. The act of affirming or the state of being affirmed; assertion 2. Something declared to be true; a positive statement or judgement.

If you can’t motivate yourself and be your biggest fan, then who can. This is not about being conceited, it’s about keeping positive, motivating thoughts in your head at all times. One of my biggest pet peeves is when an athlete approaches a heavy bar and before lifting it says “this is gonna be heavy.” Well yes, if that’s what you’re telling yourself then, yeah it’s going to be heavy and you’re probably going to miss the lift.

“There is a voice in the Universe urging us to remember our purpose for being on the Earth. This is the voice of inspiration, which is within each and every one of us.” – Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

I’ve always believed that CrossFit is half mental and half physical. When my athletes are going for a one rep max, I always tell them they have to get their mind right first. The best way to do this is through affirmations. You should always have a word or phrase that you tell yourself that gets you fired up. That makes you feel like you can take on the world. That no weight is too heavy or WOD is too difficult.

In my gym bag I carry a bottle cap with me that says “I am POWERFUL”. That is my affirmation. I say that before every WOD and before every one rep max.

I’ve asked a few inspiring athletes and coaches in our community to share their affirmations:

Carey Kepler: “KILL IT!” and “The time is now, there is no option to stop, do or die.”

Karen Pierce: “Phil 4:13″ and “#getdangerous”

Ingrid Kantola: “Just get through it. Every rep makes you better/stronger.”

Lisa Bender Thiel: “Let’s go, b*tch!” , “It’s your race!” and “calm and steady.”

So, your homework is to find your word or a phrase. It has to be something that lights a fire in your heart. You have to mean it and it has to be said with conviction. Next time you face the bar or before 13.4 repeat it over and over in your head before you hear 3,2,1…GO. See what happens!
