I first learned about CrossFit Central through my boss, co-worker, and my best friend’s husband. They were constantly telling me about their experiences and workouts and the more I heard about it, the more interested I became. I had been doing workouts at a regular gym and they just weren’t yielding the results that I so desperately wanted and needed. I had purchased a wedding dress a year ago and when the dress came in last October, it wouldn’t zip all the way up. I was desperate to fit into the dress. Knowing that my wedding was now only six months away, I figured if I was going to get into the shape that I wanted to be in for my big day and to fit into that dress, I needed to get started now! At first I didn’t think it was something that I could commit to, but after giving it some serious thought, I decided that I was going to give it a try.
Prior to joining CrossFit, more than anything- I was frustrated. Despite the hours and money I had put into working out, taking yoga, and private coaching sessions, I was still not seeing results. I was very down on myself because I felt like no matter what I tried, I was never going to change my body.
Above all, the results that I have seen have changed my attitude. I have a completely new way of thinking about myself and what I am capable of. I have always been hard on myself and self conscious as far as my physical appearance, but since joining CrossFit, I am comfortable with my body for the first time in my life. It is so empowering to talk to friends about lifting weights and moving the kind of weight that I have been able to move. It is incredible to think that I am at my lowest body weight in my adult life, yet I am lifting more weight than I ever dreamed I could. Not only have I experienced an incredible boost in my self confidence, but I am seeing muscle tone and definition where there was none before, and I am fitting into size 4 clothing- down from size 8/10. Best of all, I went in for a wedding dress fitting recently, the seamstress had to take IN the dress in at the waist!
I have also noticed that since joining CrossFit, I less tired, and I feel more motivated to get things done on a day to day basis. I know that I am not perfect and I have plenty of room for improvement, but I have seen what I have accomplished and know that it IS possible to make positive change. Weight lifting was something I piddled around with at the gym (always machines, never free weights) because I was intimidated. Now that I know the proper technique for lifting, I feel empowered and excited to keep increasing my loads. Who would have ever thought I could deadlift 175!? I actually enjoy (and even look forward) to my workouts!
Lost over 12% body fat, 8 inches and over 4 dress sizes!
The Paleo lifestyle has also played a huge role in the changes I have made. Before CrossFit, I was so desperate to lose weight that I joined Jenny Craig. While I lost a lot of weight, it was impractical to think that I could live off of frozen and preserved foods for any length of time. Since I have starting eating a Paleo diet, I feel like I have so much more freedom. I have more self control when it comes to what I eat and I can eat out and still find something healthy to select, without filling my body with unnatural and artificial ingredients. Since making the switch to eating Paleo foods I have maintained the weight loss from Jenny Craig, and even lost a few more pounds, all while gaining muscle!
My coaches Travis and Ben, the support staff, and my classmates are always encouraging and make me feel like I belong. The community is incredibly supportive and I have made some new friends along the way. It is nice sharing this kind of intense, challenging experience with people that are in your same position, or have been there before and keep coming back for more! Since joining, I have helped four friends join as well and I am always eager to show anyone interested what I have learned.
For the first time in a very long time, I feel comfortable in my own skin. By being confident in myself, I am able to be a better person to those around me. I don’t shy away from challenges and the anxiety I used to feel about my appearance no longer impedes me. I feel more outgoing and definitely free to put myself out there emotionally and physically.
Because I have always seen myself as overweight, I have never felt comfortable working out around other people. In CrossFit, I am not only comfortable around my peers, but their encouragement goes a long way to keeping me motivated and pushing me. There are a lot of times during a workout when it would just be easy to stop and give up, and where it used to be enough just to work out for me, now it is only good enough if I know I put my all into it!
