Why Central Athlete Doesn’t Use the Word “Athlete”
WRITTEN BY Jesse O'Brien

Words carry power. They shape our perceptions, guide our actions, and reflect our values. At Central Athlete, we take pride in being precise with our speech—because words and the people we serve matter. This is why we consciously choose not to use the word “athlete” in the way much of the fitness industry does.

For most gyms, the term “athlete” is thrown around to describe anyone who steps into their doors. But let’s pause and reflect: Is every person lifting weights or running sprints truly an athlete? At Central Athlete, the answer is clear: no.

Who We Serve: Lifestyle Changers, Not Athletes

In the traditional sense, an athlete is someone driven to push their body to the absolute limit in pursuit of a podium finish, championship, or record-breaking performance. These individuals dedicate every aspect of their lives to training, competition, and achievement.

Most people who walk through our doors don’t fit that description—and that’s okay. You are not here to win medals but to win at life. Our clients are general population civilians who want to live with vitality, confidence, and purpose. They’re parents, professionals, students, and retirees—everyday people striving to make extraordinary choices.

For you, fitness isn’t an end in itself; it’s a tool. A vehicle. A means to craft an exceptional life that prioritizes health, energy, and longevity. And while fitness plays a pivotal role in your journey, it doesn’t define you.

Precision in Speech: A Central Athlete Philosophy

In his book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, Jordan Peterson emphasizes the importance of being precise in speech. He argues that unclear or careless language creates unnecessary confusion, and when we use words carelessly, we risk misunderstanding and misrepresentation.

At Central Athlete, this principle guides how we define ourselves and our work. By avoiding the blanket term “athlete,” we honor the unique journey of everyone who comes to us. We recognize that:

Precision in speech fosters clarity. It ensures that when you join Central Athlete, you know we’re not here to mold you into someone you’re not. Instead, we empower you to become the best version of yourself.

Fitness as a Vehicle for an Exceptional Life

The fitness industry often glorifies extreme training regimens, hyper-focused nutrition plans, and "no excuses" mindsets. These approaches might work for elite athletes, but they often alienate or overwhelm those simply trying to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

At Central Athlete, our philosophy is different. We don’t train you to compete; we train you to thrive:

Exceptional lives are built through consistent, intentional actions. Whether you’re carrying groceries, keeping up with your kids, or climbing mountains, your fitness journey is about living fully—not beating someone else.

Redefining What Fitness Means

By rejecting the overuse of “athlete,” Central Athlete reclaims what fitness truly means: empowering you to live a remarkable life on your terms.

We’re here to partner with you—not to impose an identity but to nurture the one you already have. Together, we’ll create a roadmap that aligns with your goals, supports your lifestyle, and helps you achieve the extraordinary.

Let's start the conversation if you’re ready to redefine what fitness means for you. Schedule a Strategy Session today.

You don’t have to be an athlete to live exceptionally. You just need the proper guidance—and that’s where we come in.
